It is situated at Eastern Ghats at an elevation of 1,501 metres (4,925 ft). This is the second highest mountain peak of Odisha after Deomali in Koraput district. It has interesting archaeological remains. The hill is associated with mythological stories from the Ramayana as Mahendra Parvata (mountain) and the Mahabharata that Parashurama practiced penance for a long time on the Mahendra Mountain. Legend says that it is the place where lord Parashurama is staying eternally. We can see temples built by Pandavas. Main festival here is Shivaratri, the worship of Shiva as Lord Gokarneswar. The Mahendragiri is a place of great scenic beauty. The place is surrounded on three sides by hills and thick growth of wild trees. Reach at the Kunti Temple and ashram. The hill top is dotted with a couple of ashrams. The one near Kunti temple – run by Shri Bhaskar Baba- offers meals to tourists who venture to the top of the hill. Visit Kunti Temple, the temple where Kunti worshipped has been called as Kunti temple. Overnight stay ashram/camp side at Mahendragiri Mountain. (Total- 53 km)

Morning after breakfast,Mountain trekking starts visit to Yudishtar temple, situated in the corner of the hill. Where you can see the grass lands and the flag is at the Parasuram statue near the temple. Inside temple there is Sivalingam. It is believed that these temples were built by Pandavas for worshiping lord Shiva and people use to call them after their names. It’s also believed that Lord Parasuram has lived on Mahendragiri. Then visit Bheema temple, a temple which is cracked. An interesting thing about this is that during Shivaratri people use to pass through the crack. Bheema temple is in clouds and from here we can see the beautiful valley behind the hill.

After that trek to Daru Brahma, is the top point and on the way you can see meeting place of Pandavas, where they use rocks to sit on, Then reached Daru Brahma and pradakshina around it.  Return back to ashram/camp, on the way back you must visit place from where the stream Mahendratanaya River is originating. Water was oozing from under a rock layer which is transformed into a stream and is flowing down the hills. This is a kutcha road with regular hair pin bends. Except the road it’s all lush green everywhere.
